Well, it’s happening again. My dad is talking about getting a hunting dog. No matter how many times my mom and I try talking him out of this stupid idea, he insists he wants one. You see, it’s not the dog that I’m opposed to. I’m totally a dog person. It’s my dad as a dog owner that I have a huge problem with. My dad should never be allowed to own living creatures. The only reason my sister and I survived into adulthood was because my mom was there to take care of us. It’s not that my dad was purposefully neglectful, he just didn’t realize small children shouldn’t be left to their own devices. He barely remembers to eat himself. Therefore, if he gets a dog, guess who’s going to be taking care of it? Me. I know this. You see, my dad is really good to my dog, but only because he doesn’t have to take care of her. He just gets to have fun with her. He doesn’t see the hours of care that I put into her each day. And she isn’t even a puppy. I know I’d be the one taking the dog out, feeding it, etc. I just don’t want another dog right now. I love my dog to death, but she’s work. I’m happy with just her. And then there’s the issue of my poor mom. Mom is not an animal person. It was an extreme parental sacrifice for her to allow me to have Lucie. That being said, Mom adores Lucie. Still, I do the majority of the care, plus all of the expenses come out of my pocket. She also knows that when I move out, Lucie will go with me. Now my mom may get stuck with a dog for another 15 years. Not fair at all. This whole situation sounds like a 5 year old begging his parents for a dog. Please?? I promise I’ll take care of it!! Meanwhile, the parents know exactly who’ll be taking care of the dog. I just don’t know what to say to him. The more my mom and I try to convince him that he shouldn’t get a dog, the more he wants to prove he should. Still, I’m afraid that if we told him he could get a dog, he actually would. Any suggestions?
