Today I officially entered Steph’s Knitting Olympics. Anyone who competes must choose a challeging project to begin when the Olympic torch is lit and finish by the time the flame is extinguished. For Official Rules, click here. I decided that I would do a pair of socks. That will definitely be a challenge for me. I’ve been wanting an excuse to learn for a while, so why not the Olympics? I’ll definitely be in need of Olympian strength. So, off I went merrily to the yarn store last night. I’d never been to this particular yarn store, so I thought I’d check it out. Okay, you know what I hate? Salespeople who act like used car dealers. There were two people in the store last night when I went in. In five seconds, they’d told me that the socks I wanted to make (clearly labeled “beginner”) would be far beyond my skill level, wanted me to make this really stupid hat with a sock hanging off the end of it, and tried to sell me $90 worth of stuff to make said stupid hat. Fortunately for me, their shifts ended at 5. In came the knitting goddess who is my new best friend. She sympathized with me and told me that, if I wanted to make socks, to go right ahead and make socks. She would help me in any way she could. She also didn’t try to sell me anything. In fact, she told me that if I had cheaper yarn at home (and I do), she’d recommend doing my first pair of socks on that. I ended up spending $8 on new double-pointed needles and a nice, simple pattern. Just what I wanted in the first place. I will not be returning to this yarn store unless the knitting goddess is there. Maybe I can count this experience as the preliminary events that all athletes go through before making the Olympic team. Maybe.
