Wow. It’s been quite a week. I can’t tell you much about it because it involves my place of employment, and we all know how they feel about blogs. Suffice it to say that I was working a conference there, and it involved a gopher for much of the week. Much urban hiking. Oh the blisters on my poor feet. Despite all of the madness, I did get to meet a lot of really cool people, all of them authors. In fact, if you’re looking for a good book, I highly recommend The Accidental Buddhist by Dinty Moore. Yeah, okay, I thought he was kidding too when he introduced himself. He wasn’t. And no, it’s not a penname. I wonder if his parents really wanted him to get beat up on the playground all the time? Anyway, he’s hysterically funny and one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. I love this guy. His book is about discovering why Buddhism is a growing trend in America, but it’s written from his personal experiences meeting Buddhists, going on Buddhist retreats, and even meeting the Dalai Lama. Very cool.
For all of you moms out there, I also recommend The Lunch-Box Chronicles by Marion Winik, who was another author I met this week. Her book is about surviving as a single parent of two boys after her husband dies of AIDS. It’s her exploration of what it means to be a “good mom.” It’s a great book whether you have kids or not.
Finally, as I am from Pittsburgh, I just have to say Go Steelers!!! In one of the buildings where I work, there were Steeler signs up all over the place. One of them actually was titled “A Prayer for Steeler Triumpf,” spelled just like that. Okay people, that’s just embarrassing. If you didn’t know how to spell triumph, you could have changed to word to victory. Or would that have ended up “victorie”?
GO STEELERS!!!!!!!
