Okay, Tuesday was a crappy day all around. Even before Kerry lost the election, I got a letter from the evil company who owns my undergrad loans. It’s ACS/Brazos (be advised if any of you owe money to them). First of all, the letter came in a plain envelope without even their name on it. I thought it was just another credit card offer, but fortunately, I opened it anyhow. Turns out it was a letter (dated OCTOBER 20th, btw) that said their systems had been hacked into and many of their customers’ personal info including names and social security numbers had been stolen. great. So I had to call the credit bureau (800-525-6285) and put a security flag on my account. Then I had to do the same thing with my bank. fun, fun, fun. Of course this means that I’ll have to keep a very close watch on my account for the next few years. joy. What pisses me off the most is that they waited TWO WHOLE WEEKS to notify me of this. I haven’t seen any unusual activity on my bank account or credit card, but that doesn’t mean anything. I’ll only know for sure when I get the free credit report that I was promised with my security flag. Anyone have any other suggestions for anything else I could do?
Any Suggestions?

Yeah they (acs) were selling their computers to a company called disc stomper or some such who promised to erase their surplus pcs and macs before reselling. Not only were they not, they were reselling to a dealer who also sold NASA surplus with promotional material still on the HD’s. Nothing vital but considering this guy (nice and honest a he was) was a columbian national without proper papers I bet, I made a call. The hacker was probably acs and their poor IT security proceedures. This was six years ago so it’s moot now but these companies need to erase those hd’s theselves then hire a bonded company to do it again on case they miss one with ss numbers on it.
